Great composition starts with knowing where to place the various elements within your frame. Think tic-tac-toe in a square and you’re on track. The rule of thirds says placing your most important element (the focal point) at the intersection of your lines will make a better image. I say this is true most of the time. Sometimes bent rules lead to stunning images.

2. Get in Close

Many times (especially when photographing people) the new photographer doesn’t get in close enough. The essense of the photograph is lost because it’s not right there in your face. Instead it’s back there in the frame. That doesn’t work. It doesn’t always NOT work either. Sometimes you should fill the frame with your subject. Sometimes.

3. What’s You’re Angle?

Occasionally a minor shift to the left or right will line things up for a better photograph. And sometimes you might have to go for a walk. Remember to consider the angle you are shooting from along with the elements you want in your photograph. Capture the action however you must, but when there’s time for it, take a tour within your viewfinder. You will likely see many wonderful things that you’ve been missing out on.

4. Going Vertical

Quite often you see a photograph with the subject in the center and a whole lot of nothing interesting on both sides. Often it’s because the subject is tall so the photographer zooms or backs away to fit it in. A better way might be to flip the camera up on it’s side and shoot on a vertical format. Really advanced digital cameras will capture so much fine detail that cropping from landscape to portrait is easily done with very little loss. But what about YOUR camera?

5. Rules Are Made To Be Broken

Many of the best photos in the world are full of broken rules. But so are ALL of the worst. When you have mastered the rules you can manipulate them to your advantage. Sometimes it’s clearly obvious that breaking them gives the best visual results, and that IS what you’re shooting for … a stunning digital image. You’d be wise to get familiar with what makes a great picture first. Then later, as you gain experience, you are encouraged to play more freely.

As you practice digital photography your images will get better. The mechanical aspects of taking a picture soon fade to a level of conscious competence. Think about when you first learned to drive a car and compare that to driving now. You barely think about it at all. You just do it and go where you want to go. Your camera is much the same. It’s just a mechanical tool used to reproduce what YOU see in a format that allows others to see it as well.
